Silhouette of a Man
Unknown Artist Probably English 1830–1840 Paper on fabric 87.95.208.1 Gift of the Albermarle Chapter, NSDAR
The biggest obstacle to owning a portrait was arguably cost. Other methods of owning a likeness were available to those of lesser means. Silhouettes, hollow-cuts, and miniature portraits were alternative forms that were more accessible to the general public. This particular hollow-cut is made from a cut piece of paper and laid on top of black fabric.
