The model for familial bonds followed that of Britain’s wealthy and elite. Emma and Elizabeth Crewe are depicted in a close and loving embrace. When Elizabeth married, they remained connected. Emma also built relations with other female family members. Her sister-in-law, Lady Frances Crewe, was especially influential to her. Lady Crewe was a society hostess and introduced Emma to Josiah Wedgwood, who later became Emma’s business associate.
