Prints often served as a source of inspiration to artists and sitters. Artists were known to have carried a variety of prints for clients to consider for their portraits. Itinerant artist John Hesselius was said to have had over 200 prints in his possession. Prints, like this mezzotint after a Sir Joshua Reynolds portrait, helped to bring popular styles, symbols, and portrait motifs across the Atlantic to North America.
